Lab Grown Diamonds

What are the differences between these two types of diamonds?

Misconceptions have led people to believe that lab grown diamonds are not real, but that is not true. Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds in every meaningful way – they just weren’t created in the earth.

Natural Diamonds are crystallized carbon structures that were created under extreme heat and pressure deep under Earth’s surface. Events like volcanic eruptions brought them closer to the surface where they are extracted through mining.

Lab grown diamonds are created from carbon seed placed in a controlled environment that recreates the conditions under which natural diamonds develop. The result is chemically, physically, and visually identical to natural diamonds in nearly every way. The difference between them can only be determined by using specialized instruments that can detect minor differences in trace elements and crystal growth.

Most lab-grown diamonds are whiter and less included than mined diamonds due to the controlled circumstances of their creation. The process of growing a diamond in a laboratory allows for greater quality control, resulting in diamonds that are more consistent in terms of color and clarity.

Since this cleaner technology allows for consistent diamond production without the expenses and hazards of mining, lab grown diamonds are an amazing value at a cost that is typically 50% less than their natural counterparts. This allows customers to get a diamond that is almost twice the size they were expecting to get for the same budget. Call us today if you have any questions!

Lab Grown Diamonds FAQ

Diamonds are grown in a lab very similarly to how they grow in nature. Diamonds grow when conditions are just right, and that requires extreme heat and extreme pressure. In a laboratory with proper machinery, scientists can recreate the environmental conditions necessary for diamond crystal growth.

Diamonds created in a laboratory have exactly the same chemical composition as diamonds found in nature, In their true essence, a diamond mined from the earth, and a diamond grown in a laboratory are the same, both are real diamonds.

Cubic Zirconia (CZ’s) are not diamonds. CZ’s are diamond simulants, which mean they are similar to diamonds because they share certain visual characteristics. However, lab grown diamonds are actual diamonds, whereas CZ’s simply appear to look similar to diamonds.

Since lab grown diamonds are actual diamonds, they can be sent to grading labs for certification just like diamonds mined from the ground. Many lab grown diamonds are sold with grading certification which details their cut, clarity, color, carat weight, and specific measurements.

Lab grown diamonds contain internal characteristics which determine their clarity grade. Just like diamonds mined from the ground, the size, number, nature, and color of these internal characteristic found within each diamond determine the diamond’s clarity grade. Flawless refers only to diamonds which have zero visible internal and external characteristics viewed under 10x magnification by a trained diamond grader. Flawless diamonds are very rare for either lab grown diamonds or diamonds mined from the earth.

The value of both mined and lab grown diamonds fluctuate with market trends. At After Midnight Jewelers both lab grown and mined diamonds retain their Full Value against any future trade ups.

Lab grown diamonds are appraised using the same techniques that are used when appraising mined diamonds. A skilled appraiser will be able to determine value and create a report that reflects their findings.

Yes! Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds and a diamond tester will say so. There is now a highly specialized machine that is able to detect if a diamond was created in a lab with the use of ultraviolet light.

Lab grown diamonds are insured just like any other piece of jewelry. With the proper documentation provided by the jewelry retailer, or a professional appraiser, an insurance company will insure a lab grown diamond and the jewelry it is a part of.

Lab grown diamonds are subject to the same market conditions as mined diamonds.
