Understanding the Mohs Hardness Scale for Jewelry Care
Mohs Hardness Scale

As summer winds down and fall begins, it’s the perfect time for a seasonal refresh. Cooler days bring new outfits, layered looks, and opportunities to bring favorite jewelry pieces back into rotation. Before stepping into the new season, it’s worth taking a moment to make sure those treasured pieces are clean, polished, and ready to shine. Understanding the Mohs Hardness Scale can help you choose the right jewelry for everyday wear and know how to care for it properly.

The Mohs Hardness Scale measures a gemstone’s resistance to scratching on a scale from 1 to 10. It doesn’t measure how tough or unbreakable a stone is, but rather how well it resists scratches from other materials. This simple scale is one of the reasons some gemstones are better suited for everyday rings, while others are better reserved for occasional wear.

Diamonds sit at the top of the Mohs Hardness Scale with a rating of 10, making them the hardest natural gemstone. Rubies and sapphires follow closely behind at 9, which is why they’re also excellent choices for engagement rings and jewelry that’s worn regularly. Softer gemstones like opals, pearls, and turquoise are beautiful in their own right, but they require a little more care because they’re more susceptible to scratches and everyday wear.

Knowing how durable your jewelry is becomes especially helpful during busy family gatherings in fall. Cooking, decorating, moving furniture, and even washing dishes can expose rings and bracelets to bumps and hard surfaces. Taking a few moments to remove delicate pieces during these activities can go a long way in protecting them.

Durability isn’t just about the gemstone, either. The setting, prongs, and metal should be inspected regularly to make sure everything remains secure. Even a diamond can be lost if worn prongs go unnoticed. That’s why routine professional inspections are just as important as understanding the Mohs Hardness Scale itself.
